How to Know that YOU Have Eternal Life

Biblical Worldview world views

The Bible is the Word of God and He has said in His word that you and I can know that we have eternal life (1 John 5:13). It doesn’t have to be a mystery, worry, burden, fear or just a “hope” but the Creator of mankind, the author and perfector of a Christian’s faith says that we can know we have eternal life. If you are interested in knowing that you have eternal life then please read on.

The term “Gospel” is one that most are at least familiar with or have heard used in various contexts. Gospel simply means “good news”. However, as with all things in life, there is no such thing as “good news” if there wasn’t any thing known as “bad” news. Without bad news – the Gospel isn’t “good” news, its just news which doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. I will try to quickly explain what the Bible, the word of God says regarding the existing bad news about your life and will follow it up with what the Lord has to say in His word regarding the Good News, the Gospel, which He has made available to you to have eternal life and to KNOW you have eternal life.

First Truth

Know that God exists and that he is a rewarder of all who diligently seek Him – it all starts with the acceptance that the God spoken of in the Bible truly exists

Hebrews 11:6

But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.

Second Truth

Fear of God (of the Bible) is the beginning of wisdom – some try to define this “fear” as “reverence” which is terribly wrong – it is the terrifying fear that is equated with dread (phobo) that Jesus spoke of when he said “fear Him who which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell”. Its quite obvious Jesus wasn’t saying to “reverence” (timao) the one who has this power but have a genuine fear just as the plain reading of the passage indicates.

Proverbs 9:10

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.

Matthew 10:28

And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

An honest and humble acceptance of these two truths is critical to recognising both the gravity of the bad news about each and every person and valuing the good news which follows.

Bad News #1

Recognise the sad fact that no one seeks the Lord nor is anyone “righteous” – not you, not me, not anyone. No matter how “good” or “ok” we think we are. No matter how much better than others we think ourselves to be. No matter how “understanding” (accepting) of our sin we think God is or should be.

Ecclesiastes 7:20

For there is not a just man upon earth, that doeth good, and sinneth not.

Romans 3:10-11

As it is written: “There is none righteous, no, not one; There is none who understands; There is none who seeks after God. They have all turned aside; They have together become unprofitable; There is none who does good, no, not one.”

Bad News #2

Admit that, like everyone else, you have “missed the mark” which is defined as sin. Moreover we are all in outright rebellion toward the God of the Bible in that we have each gone our own way and this “sin” has separated us from the One true God. We might think He hears our prayers in our unforgiven sinful state but He only hears one prayer – a cry for mercy and forgiveness.

Romans 3:23

For all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God

Isaiah 53:6

All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.

Isaiah 59:2

But your iniquities have separated between you and your God,and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.

Bad News #3

Understand that if we die in this sinful separated state – it is permanent for all eternity and this eternal separation from God means a permanent absence of all things even remotely good: comfort, peace, laughter, companionship, satisfaction – all are gone for all eternity as they came from God Almighty and remain with Him while you will remain apart from Him.

Romans 6:23

For the wages of sin is death (eternal separation – the second death)

Hebrews 9:24

As it is appointed for man to die once after that is judgement.

Ephesians 2:12-13

Remember that you were at that time separate from Christ, excluded fromthe commonwealth of Israel, and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world.

Bad News #4
Recognise that we are slaves to this sin which separates us and we can’t stop sinning even if we wanted to – this is a hard thing to recognise as we seem to think, in our deceived state, that we can just “try harder” and eventually live a God-fearing righteous life. This is a delusion and because of your enslaved sin-separated condition, like everyone else, you need a Saviour – who is none other than God Himself.

Philippians 3:18-20

For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you evenweeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ: Whose end is destruction, whose God is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame, who mind earthly things.

John 8:34-36

Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is theslave of sin. The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son does remain forever. So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed.

If you’ve made it this far in reading this, well done. Most will turn away after hearing the very first bit of bad news but if you accept the truths that God exists, rewards those that seek Him and you have a healthy fear of facing Him in judgement – then you have heard the bad news and accepted, admitted that it is true of all of us and you in particular, you are now ready to hear the good news, the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ and what He has done for us and for you in particular.

Good News #1
Know that God provided a Saviour, His only begotten Son Jesus (of the Bible) who is none other than God Almighty incarnate in the person of the Son who died on the Cross to pay for your sins and mine for all eternity so we can spend eternity with Him and not separated from Him.

John 3:16-17

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believesin Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.

Romans 6:23

For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

1 Timothy 1:15-17

This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance, that Christ Jesus cameinto the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief. However, for this reason I obtained mercy, thatin me first Jesus Christ might show all longsuffering, as a pattern to those who are going to believe on Him for everlasting life.

Isaiah 53:5

But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: thechastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

Good News #2

Confess your sin and helpless sin condition which keeps you at enmity with the God of the Bible who created everything seen from the unseen. Cry out for mercy and forgiveness – its no use deluding yourself that you are “giving your life” to Him. You have no life to give, nor did I as we were dead in our trespasses. Its no use “asking Jesus into your heart” as the Bible says our heart is deceitfully wicked and that we need an entirely NEW heart.

Romans 10:9-13

Because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in yourheart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and isjustified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. For the scripture saith, Whosoeverbelieveth on him shall not be ashamed. For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek:for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

Luke 18:9-14

Also He spoke this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they wererighteous, and despised others: “Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, ‘God, I thank You that I am not like other men—extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this tax collector. I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I possess.’ And the tax collector, standing afar off, would not so much as raise his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me a sinner!’ I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himselfwill be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”

Good News #3

Jesus was raised from the dead by the power of God and has victory over both sin and death in His own life (He never sinned, death couldn’t hold Him) and in your life (He can give you a new heart with an inclination toward goodness, kindness, love, joy, peace, patience and an inclination away from sin) and repent (turn) from your sinful past way of life and those things which are contrary to His word.

2 Corinthians 5:14-15

For the love of Christ constraineth us; because we thus judge, that if one died for all, then were all dead: And that he died for all, that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto him which died for them, and rose again.

Acts 2:36-39 36
Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made the same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ. Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do? Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.

Good News #4

Now if you have been sincere toward the Lord, you can know that because you cried out to the One True saving God of the Bible in simple child-like faith – that He will respond to your cry as He said He would do and he will save you out his mercy (undeserved forgiveness) and grace (unmerited favour). Because He has done this for you as a free gift of love toward you, walk in the newness of life given to you by Jesus – growing in the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ exhibiting the fruit of the Spirit: Peace, joy, patience, kindness, goodness, forgiveness.

John 6:37

All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will by no means cast out.

Galatians 2:20

I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me.

John 5:22-24

For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son: That all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent him. Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.

1 John 5:12-13:

He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life. 13 These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God.

God’s Final, Infallible, Fully Sufficient Word to Us. It is not our efforts or deeds or even the amount or quality of our faith that saves or contributes to our salvation but rather our salvation is purely based on what Jesus, God’s own Son, did on our behalf out of His own goodness and mercy  – as the Bible tells us in Ephesians 2:8-9 it is by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourself, it is the gift of God, not of works lest any man should boast.”

Ultimately, you will know that you have eternal life and therefore should not fear death if you have come to believe sincerely that Jesus has heard your sincere cry for help to save you from your sins and that He, being God incarnate and the ultimate Judge before whom all sinners must appear, is fully able and capable of saving you by applying his death payment to your death penalty.

But now in Christ Jesus you who formerly were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ.

What those who have come to a saving faith should expect is fruit that begins to be demonstrated in the life of the believer. This doesn’t mean we’re perfect overnight but it does mean that our desires change as if by some miraculous conversion. We no longer desire to live a life devoid of the One true and living God of the Bible but we seek to do what pleases Him. We desire the pure milk of the Word of God. We want to be around others that also love the word of God. We want to share Jesus with others. We lose desires to run with the devils that were our supposed friends. But again, it won’t be perfection overnight.

Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.

James says that faith without works is dead, show me your faith, I’ll show you my faith by my works. Its quite clear that a genuine conversion to Jesus, someone who has come to a believing saving faith in God Almighty through the finished work of Jesus will begin to exhibit a life of repentance (not just a one-time act). We don’t repent to ‘get’ saved. We repent by turning to Jesus to be saved. And what do we turn from? Our old dead works

This person will want to be baptised to declare to the whole world that the old man has gone down in a watery tomb and the new man has arisen to new life in Christ. This will be a “new” natural outgrowth of a born again believer. We don’t get baptized and declare the Gospel to lost souls in order to ‘get’ saved but because we have been saved, these will be our new desires – coming from within (Holy Spirit regenerated spirit within us) and not forced inward from the outside (works).
